Following a visit from the structural engineers at the council, we have just been informed that the hall is being closed with immediate effect until a full assessment can be carried out. Unfortunately, this means no club tomorrow (22nd January) or for the next few weeks. Further updates as soon as we have more information. We are told that the assessment/interim repairs may take up to six weeks. In the meantime, we are investigating interim accommodation

Update:

An alternative location is under discussion, at Caversham Court Gardens (RG47AD - just past the Griffin Pub in Caversham, adjacent to St Peters Church), as an interim measure until the works are complete at Mapledurham.

It is now likely that this will be available from Friday 5th February - further updates to follow.

Hi all,

Apologies for the lack of updates over the last week. We have found an alternative accommodation with the council at Caversham Court Gardens. However, the council need to go through due diligence (fire, water, electrics) which doesn't look like we are going to be ready for this Friday - 5th February.

We will definitely be meeting on Friday 12th February. Hopefully at Caversham Court Gardens, but if not, an alternative venue will be found.

Further updates at the weekend

Regards,

Alex

There will be no Spiky Club again this Friday (12th Feb). The council's alternative accomodation is still not yet ready and we have been unable to find another cost effective alternative at short notice. Because we keep getting let down by the council and thus keep having to let you guys down, which is something that we really don't want to be doing, there will be no Spiky until further notice.
The committee are going to continue to chase the council as well as looking at alternative venues and if we get any news then you will be the first to know about it so please keep checking back to the page to make sure that you're not missing out. Likewise if anyone knows of any halls/venues that we could use then please forward on those details onto the committee.

We are sorry for the disruption and hoepfully it won't be too long before we will be back up and running.

We are pleased to announce that after much searching that we have found a new venue to hold Spiky Club and that the first night at the new venue will be next Friday (18th March). Our new venue is the Maiden Place Community Centre which is just off Kilnsea Drive in Lower Earley (RG6) . We will be meeting at our usual times of 7-11pm although the building should be available for us at from about 6:45.

Due to the disruption and the fact that we haven't be able to meet recently we've decided to give everyone an extra incentive to come! So for the first week only we are waiving the nightly fee everyone. After this it will be business as usual and so £2 for members £4 for non members etc. The new venue does however have an adjacent social club with a (reasonably priced) bar so please bring cash for that if you want drinks. If you need cash there is a cash machine outside Sainsbury's at the bottom of the road.

How to get to the new venue
Below we've supplied directions to the new venue from 3 general directions. If you're struggling to work out how to get there please contact us and we'll try to help you. Please note that the postcode given for the new venue is the same as a postcode for an adjoining close and so if you type it into a Sat-nav you are likely to get lost! For this reason we've given you the post code for the local shops that are at the other end of the road, if you're using this in a Sat Nav, when you reach Maiden place please take the right fork on the road and head up the hill. There will be a car park directly ahead of you and the Community Centre is on your left next to the baptist church. Also these directions are probably not the quickest route you can take they are just the simplest to explain.

Directions from Reading (Centre)
From Kings Road take the right hand fork at Cemetery Junction to join the A329 (Wokingham Road). Follow the road for approximately 2.5 miles till you arrive at the Loddon Bridge roundabout. At the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the B3270 (Lower Earley Way). At the first roundabout you come to turn right onto Rushy Way then after 300yds turn left onto Kilnsea Drive. Follow Kilnsea Drive for 2/3 mile and then take the first left after the pedestrian crossing into Maiden Place. Where the road splits after about 20yds turn right up the hill and the Community Centre will be on your left next to the Baptist Church.

Directions from Reading (J11)
From the J11 roundabout follow signs for the University of Reading (UoR) and take the B3270. Follow this road to the Black Boy roundabout and take the second exit B3270. At the next roundabout take the first exit signposted Lower Earley then turn right onto Rushey Way. Follow Rushy Way taking the second exit at the next 2 roundabouts and then continue to follow the road taking the first exit at the 3rd roundabout. At the fourth roundabout turn right onto Kilnsea Drive then take the second right onto Maiden Place. Where the road splits after about 20yds turn right up the hill and the Community Centre will be on your left next to the Baptist Church.

Directions from Wokingham
Take the A329 (Reading Road) towards Reading and follow for aproximately 3 miles until you reach the Loddon Bridge roundabout. At the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the B3270 (Lower Earley Way).

Directions by Bus (using the #21)
Catch the 21 Bus from Reading town centre. The best places to catch it are either just outside the station at stop EJ or next to the central post office on Market Place at stop MA. This bus also goes via the University of Reading so you can also catch the bus there. Buses go roughly every 10 minutes during the day till 6:30 and cost £1.90 for a single or £2.40 for a return (if travelling after 5:30pm). Disembark the bus at the Chilcombe Way bus stop and walk down the hill to the first road on the right. Where the road splits after about 20yds turn right up the hill and the Community Centre will be on your left next to the Baptist Church. When going home the buses leave Chilcombe way at 23 and 53 past the hour and run all night. Return tickets are valid until about 4am.
